Skin Alley - Skin Alley (1969)

Skin Alley to jeden z wielu zespołów, które powstały w Anglii na przełomie lat 60 i 70 i tworzyły szeroko pojęty rock progresywny. To, co szczególnie cenię w twórczości Skin Alley, to niezwykłe brzmienie. Dobrym punktem odniesienia może okazać się twórczość art-rockowej grupy Cressida, trochę też The Moody Blues. Wspaniałe połączenie brzmienia organów Hammonda, gitary, wokalu oraz okazyjnie fletu przenosi nas w łagodny, bajkowy jazz-rockowy świat.

Największy przebój w całej twórczości Skin Alley otrzymujemy już na początku pierwszej płyty Skin Alley. Living in Sin utrzymany w średnim tempie przypomina nieco za sprawą głównego motywu na flecie twórczość Jethro Tull. Ten utwór na warsztat wzięła także polska grupa Test. Zarówno nieco żywsze utwory (Marsha) jak i te bardziej intymne i tajemnicze (Tell Me, All Alone) dają wyraz niezwykłego kunsztu i wyobraźni muzyków. Dla Skin Alley każdy moment jest dobry, aby oddać się swobodnej improwizacji. Świetnymi przykładami są Night Time i Marsha. W Mother Please Help Your Child zaskakuje refren zaśpiewany na modłę staropolskiej pieśni... Bogurodzica. Na dawną zabawę dworską zabiera nas z kolei dwuminutowa miniatura Country Aire. Zespół nie zapomina także o bluesowych zagrywkach. W Highway panowie brzmią niemal jak Climax Blues Band.

Pierwsza płyta Skin Alley jest moją ulubioną płytą zespołu. W ciągu kolejnych lat Skin Alley nagrali jeszcze trzy albumy, z czego zwłaszcza To Pagham and Beyond jest utrzymany w klimacie debiutu. Polecam.

Skin Alley is one of the many bands which formed in England in the late 60s and early 70s creating a type of music we now call “Progressive Rock”. I particularly enjoy the unusual sound they make. The band can sound somewhat similar to the “art-rock” group Cressida, with hints of The Moody Blues. A great combination of Hammond organ, guitars, vocals and occasional flute takes us to a gentle, fairy-tale world of jazz-rock.

We hear their best known song as the first track of their debut album, Skin Alley. Living in Sin is played at a medium tempo and has a flavour of Jethro Tull’s music in that the main tune is played on the flute. This track was also recorded by the Polish group Test. Both in the somewhat more dynamic songs (Marsha) and in the more intimate and mysterious (Tell Me, All Alone) they express extraordinary artistry and musical imagination. Skin Alley take every opportunity to include improvisation. Great examples of this are heard in Night Time and Marsha. Mother Please Help Your Child surprised us by using a melody line based on Bogurodzica, a fifteenth century hymn to Our Lady used as a battle hymn by Polish Knights in their victorious battle against the Teutonic Knights. Country Aire takes us to a courtly dance at a mediaeval manor house. The band did not neglect their Blues roots and in The Highway they sound almost like the Climax Blues Band.

Their first album, Skin Alley, is my favourite. In the following years Skin Alley recorded three more albums. To Pagham and Beyond is the most similar of the three to their great debut album.
